Reutemann was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, in 1942. He began his racing career in 1965 in local touring car competitions before progressing through Formula 2 racing in Argentina and Europe. His performances quickly attracted attention, and by 1972 he had secured a place in Formula One with the Brabham team. Impressively, he achieved pole position in his very first Grand Prix at the 1972 Argentine Grand Prix, immediately demonstrating his potential at the highest level of motorsport.

One of the best drivers of his era

Reutemann remained with Brabham for several seasons and earned his first Formula One victory at the 1974 South African Grand Prix. That year he won 3 races and established himself as one of the sport’s leading drivers. Over the next few seasons he consistently scored podium finishes and became a regular contender in the championship standings.

In 1976, Reutemann moved to Scuderia Ferrari, one of the most famous teams in motorsport. His most successful season with Ferrari came in 1978, when he won four races and finished third in the World Drivers’ Championship. Despite his strong performances, Ferrari was unable to challenge the dominant Team Lotus cars driven by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson that year.

After leaving Ferrari, Reutemann joined Team Lotus for the 1979 season before moving to Williams Racing in 1980. At Williams he experienced the most competitive period of his career. In 1981 he won two races and came very close to becoming world champion. Going into the final race of the season, the Las Vegas Grand Prix, he still had a chance to win the title. However, he ultimately finished second in the championship, losing to Nelson Piquet by just one point.

Reutemann retired from Formula One in 1982 after competing in 146 races. During his career he scored 12 wins, six pole positions, and 45 podium finishes, making him one of the most successful drivers of his era.
